Keeping the Pride Month festivities rolling, GLAAD and Instagram just launched #PridePortraits, a new photo campaign that encourages people to post photos of what LGBT pride means to them. Just post a photo to Instagram with the using hashtag #PridePortraits, and you can also get a chance to win behind-the-scenes access to NYC Pride, including exclusive access to the Dance on the Pier featuring a performance by Demi Lovato. Those of us with kids of a certain age could earn “Coolest Parent of the Year” status for that.

Many of us LGBT parents spend a lot of time trying to show that we’re similar to any other parents when it comes to the basics of parenting — dealing with diapers, skinned knees, and school field trips just like anyone else. Remember that Twitter party on LGBT Family Travel that I collaborated on with Residence Inn, Traveling Mom, and Family Equality last November? It’s just garnered Residence Inn a SMITTY Award (Social Media in Travel + Tourism) from Travel + Leisure for “Best Chat/Hangout.” If you participated, that means you deserve some of the credit for making the event the roaring success that it was.
My thoughts go out today to the community of Troutdale, Oregon, where a student and a suspected shooter are both dead after the later opened fire at Reynolds High School. When 27 people died after a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut two years ago, ABC News reported that there had been 31 school shootings since the one in Columbine, Colorado in 1999. Now, we learn that there have been 74 school shootings since Newtown. How many is too many?
