Wisconsin Spice Company Celebrates Marriage Equality

Wisconsin-based spice company Penzeys is celebrating the state’s marriage equality win by sharing the stories of four of the plaintiff couples (several of whom have children), including “their lives, their cooking and their love.” Lest you think they’re just jumping on the bandwagon, they also reposted an article about gay dads Pat and Dennis and their four kids that ran in their newsletter way back in 2005. It lost them customers at the time — but they stuck with their beliefs.

It’s just garnered Residence Inn a SMITTY Award (Social Media in Travel + Tourism) from Travel + Leisure for “Best Chat/Hangout.” If you participated, that means you deserve some of the credit for making the event the roaring success that it was.

Another School Shooting: When Will We Have Had Enough?

My thoughts go out today to the community of Troutdale, Oregon, where a student and a suspected shooter are both dead after the later opened fire at Reynolds High School. When 27 people died after a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut two years ago, ABC News reported that there had been 31 school shootings since the one in Columbine, Colorado in 1999. Now, we learn that there have been 74 school shootings since Newtown. How many is too many?

Parenting Changes Gay Dads’ Brain Activity: Does It Matter?

A new study shows that having a child triggers changes in a mother’s brain — and that becoming a parent via surrogacy can trigger changes in a gay man’s brain, too. Interestingly, the gay men’s pattern of brain activity “resembles that of both new mothers and new fathers,” reports Reuters. The article speculates that the research “could feed into the debate over whether gay men should be allowed to adopt children.” As fascinating as the findings may be, I rather hope they’re not used in the adoption argument.

May we all spare a thought today for those who have given their lives in service to our country. On this somber day, it is heartening to see that the military may be moving towards treating fallen lesbian and gay service members the same as any others.

Today is the second national Give OUT Day, an event to encourage people to make charitable donations on a single day in support of the LGBTQ community. Any day is a good day to give, of course, but doing so en masse like this helps show the power of our community and allies.
