Following Foo (The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man)

Tony Award–winning actor B. D. Wong writes movingly about the premature birth of twins via surrogacy to him and his partner, the loss of one twin, and the three months spent in the neonatal intensive care unit as the other struggled. The book, based on a series of real-time e-mails sent to family and friends while he waited, shows his roller coaster of emotions during those early days, full of grief, worry, the support of loved ones and hospital staff, and sometimes unexpected hilarity.

Wong writes engagingly despite the pall of grief and the surgeries, pneumonia, and other challenges faced by the surviving twin. He finds humor in small details of their lives during this time—not inappropriate, but rather a survival mechanism. There is grief here, but there is also love, hope, and ultimately a message of resilience.
