What happens when a closeted gay teen stumbles across a secret that could alter our perception of one of the greatest figures in American history? That’s the question at the heart of a new young adult novel by a gay dad and award-winning expert on books for LGBTQ youth and their allies.
Zach Wahls made history last week as the first known person with LGBTQ parents to be elected to a state legislature, gaining a seat in the Iowa Senate. Six years ago, though, he wrote a book about his two moms—and I wrote a review, published elsewhere, that I never posted on this blog in full. Here it is, with an addendum.
A new study has shown the key, damaging, role parents play in “conversion therapy” efforts to change their LGBT children’s sexual orientation, and how this exacerbates health and adjustment problems for their children even into young adulthood.
A new service, launched today by a queer mom and activist, offers subscribers a quarterly, curated selection of children’s books, chosen to include characters who are LGBTQ+, feminist, of various races and ethnicities, and of other under-represented identities. In doing so, it also hopes to show publishers there’s an ongoing market for such stories.
Yesterday’s election saw the first openly gay man—and gay dad—to win a governorship, the first lesbian mom to win election to Congress, and the first person with LGBTQ parents to win state or federal office.
Go vote! Now. Or after the kids are at school. Or when you pick them up, so they can come, too. Or on your way to work, from work, or on your lunch hour. Your vote matters because you matter.
When are you voting tomorrow? Do you have a plan? This could be one of the most critical elections in our lifetimes in terms of its impact on LGBTQ equality, reproductive rights, gun control, healthcare, education, immigration, separation of church and state, and so much more. We can’t sit this one out.
Despite a litany of hateful and harmful events in our country, this is not a time to despair, even though despair may be trying to peek in our windows. This is a time for action—and the best action we can take right now is to vote and enable others to vote as well.
