Back in October, after an inquiry by a queer mom and encouragement from other LGBTQ parents and allies, Highlights magazine committed to incorporating same-sex parented families in its pages. Now, right-wing group One Million Moms is trying to stop them.
It was a good year for books about LGBTQ families and youth. Here are some of my 2016 favorites—great for gift giving or borrowing from the library to read with family over the holidays.

After an Internet uproar over the past few days over Highlights magazine’s initially weak response to why they haven’t included LGBTQ families in their pages, I reached out to Cricket Media, another long-time behemoth in children’s magazine publishing, to see if they had ever done so. Here’s what they said.
Many of us, I imagine, remember Highlights magazine from our youth. The publication gave one queer mom a less than satisfactory answer about why they haven’t included LGBTQ families on their pages—and LGBTQ families are responding.
My annual gift guide for LGBTQ families is usually a roundup of the best LGBTQ-inclusive children’s and parenting books of the year—but I’m delighted that this year’s list includes several inclusive kids’ music albums as well.
