Post of the Week: “One Little Word 2013 — Manifesto”

Wendy and Karen have been blogging at 2 Moms – It can be done since 2006. I liked Wendy’s recent post, “One Little Word 2013 — Manifesto,” because it not only gave me a glimpse into her own life, but also made me think about my own goals for the new year in a different way.

Teen Wins NPR Show’s “Performance of the Year” Award for Story About His Two Moms

Drop what you’re doing and take six minutes to watch this video. Trust me. Noah St. John is only 15 years old, but won NPR’s Snap Judgment show’s “Performance of the Year” award for his story about his two moms. I love it not only because of St. John’s amazing delivery, but also because he doesn’t hesitate to show that LGBT families face the same ups and downs as any others.

PFLAG Founder Dies at Age 92

The world has lost a pathbreaker. Jeanne Manford, founder of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), passed away today, barely a month after celebrating her 92nd birthday.

Lesbian Mom Named One of “Best Parents of 2012”

Parenting magazine has named lesbian mom Jennifer Tyrrell one of its “Best Parents of 2012.” The Ohio mom has been speaking out since April when the Boy Scouts of America told her that because of her sexual orientation, she could no longer serve as the den leader of her son’s Cub Scout chapter.

College Students with LGBTQ Parents Wanted

I’m posting a call to participate in a study about college students who have LGBTQ parents but are not LGBTQ themselves. I’m not involved in it myself, and don’t know the researcher, but heard of this through reputable channels. Please pass along as you see fit!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2013! I don’t know about you, but for me, 2012 zipped by at a faster than usual clip. I’m hoping 2013 takes a more leisurely pace, allowing us to relax, enjoy, and savor all of the sweet moments it brings.

Disney Channel Campaign Features Boy with Lesbian Moms

Here’s some great news to end the year: The Disney Channel’s social outreach campaign, “Make Your Mark,” currently includes a video about a 14-year-old boy who happens to have two moms. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) calls the video “the first of its kind for the Disney Channel, which has not included an openly gay character on its programming.”

Merry Christmas!

A very merry Christmas to those of you celebrating the holiday today! My family and I are entering the homestretch of our multi-denominational holiday festivities, which extend roughly from Thanksgiving to New Year’s or until the holiday treats run out.

Add Your Voice to Those Speaking Out for Gun Control

Gun control is only one part of what our country must do to reduce the chances of another school shooting like the one December 14 in Newtown, Connecticut—but it is a vital one. There are a number of petitions out now to let our elected officials know our thoughts on the matter. I’m highlighting a petition and a pledge from Moms Rising because they’re good folks who do a lot across the board to help those of us who have the honor of being called moms.
