“Most Outstanding Canadian” Comes Out About Two Moms

Canadian football star Jon Cornish of the Calgary Stampede won the Canadian Football League’s “Most Outstanding Canadian” award last Thursday—and came out about his two moms during his acceptance speech.

Obligatory Lesbian Mom Turkey Baster Post

Well, not exactly. Although we did use assisted reproduction, turkey basters were not in evidence. But Thanksgiving, more than any other holiday, means family to me—both the family I come from and the family my spouse and I have created.

Transgender Day of Remembrance: 51 Too Many

Today marks the 14th International Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. My thoughts are with all of the transgender community today, their parents, and their children. In 2012 alone, 51 people have been killed around the world based on their real or perceived transgender

Florida Lesbian and Gay Adoptive Parents Tell Their Stories

How time flies. It’s been two years since Florida overturned its ban on gay men and lesbians adopting children. In that time, over 200 children have been adopted by gay or lesbian parents, according to the ACLU. Two hundred children! The ACLU led the legal fight against the ban, and recently created this video showing plaintiff Martin Gill and his sons, along with Vanessa and Melanie Alenier, another Florida couple who were fighting in court to adopt their son.

Tell School District Not to Cancel Play About Gay Penguin Dads

Just days after we learned of yet another pair of same-sex penguin dads, comes the news that the Austin Independent School District in Texas has cancelled the performances at local elementary schools of “And Then Came Tango,” a play based on the real-life story of two male penguins who parented together.

X Factor Contestant Talks About Her Two Moms

I’m not a reality TV fan in general, but I was struck by this video of 13-year-old X Factor contestant Beatrice Miller talking about her two moms—and then singing her heart out.

Adoption: Starting the Journey

November is National Adoption Month, and while it’s certainly not the only time we talk about adoption around here, it’s a good time to re-emphasize the many stories and resources by and for LGBT adoptive parents. I’ll be putting up extra adoption-related posts throughout the month. I hope you’ll stop by, whether you’re an adoptive parent, considering adoption, or simply want to show your support for one of the many ways we create our families. Let’s start at the beginning, with a lovely letter by a prospective mom to the child she and her partner hope to adopt.

Gay Penguin Dads to Form Support Group

Well, no. But the pair of male penguins that just hatched an egg together in Denmark makes the fourth such couple, by my count. At the very least, they should all get together and have brunch while the chicks swim. (Maybe they’ll even invite the gay flamingos.)
