Atana and the Firebird

In this graphic novel fantasy adventure, Atana is a mermaid, living alone on an island (she has legs while on land) and trying to stay safe from the magic hunters of the outside world. When magical, humanoid firebird Ren lands on the island, however, the first of her kind to visit Earth in ages, Atana decides to join Ren on her adventures—adventures that might help Atana learn more about her past.

Fleeing magic hunters, the duo are saved by a wandering witch (who happens to be nonbinary), and come into the orbit of the mysterious and powerful Witch Queen. Through prophecies and their own investigations, both Atana and Ren uncover clues about each of their pasts, which seem tied to the fate of the world itself. The Witch Queen has secrets, too, however, some of which seem connected to a previous same-gender relationship (though not because it was a same-gender relationship), and her magnificent Blue Palace becomes a dangerous place for Atana and Ren. They are forced to flee, along with Witch Guard trainee Cosmos, who has family troubles of her own. Facing an uncertain future, but with the fate of the world in the balance, what will they do next?

Author/illustrator Vivian Zhou’s images are swooping and lovely, whether depicting the land, seas, or skies of her magical world or the clothing and movements of her characters. Queer characters are seamlessly included (and while Atana is not clearly indicated as queer, her short haircut implies a certain gender creativity).

Fans of Molly Knox Ostertag and K. O’Neill should enjoy this story that evokes similar vibes but offers original characters and worldbuilding. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but a second volume wraps things up in a satisfying way, making this a recommended tale.

Atana has light tan skin and short green hair, Ren’s has slightly darker skin and white hair, and Cosmos is pale with dark hair.
