The second volume of this graphic novel series picks up where the first left off, as mermaid Atana, firebird Ren, and Witch Guard trainee Cosmos are on the run from the powerful Witch Queen. Ren is hurt and the magic of the world itself is in danger. Atana and Ren both continue to grapple with the legacy of their peoples and the weight of prophecy. Their adventures will reconnect each of them with their kind—but can they overcome their leaders’ biases and secrets to save both themselves and the world?
More action and new characters build on the first volume, making this one even richer and more satisfying, as the book explores themes of friendship, family, identity, belonging, and global connectedness. Several two-girl/two-woman relationships also develop organically—sweet threads of the story rather than the focus. And while Atana is not clearly indicated as queer, her short haircut (and that of another character) implies a certain gender creativity.
Author/illustrator Vivian Zhou’s images are swooping and lovely, whether depicting the land, seas, or skies of her magical world or the clothing and movements of her characters. Fans of Molly Knox Ostertag and K. O’Neill should enjoy this story that evokes similar vibes but offers original characters and worldbuilding, making it a recommended tale.
Atana has light tan skin and short green hair, Ren’s has slightly darker skin and white hair, and Cosmos is pale with dark hair.
