Frank the cat and Sunny the corgi (who have two human dads) return in the third volume of this delightful chapter book series. Together with parrot Cap’n Keith, they face their biggest challenge yet: their two dads’ visiting “nibling,” a young child named Nellie.
Nellie wants to carry Frank in a basket—and worse, dress him up for a wedding to Cap’n Keith. Can he avert this marriage to someone he likes just as a friend? (Spoiler: Yes, with a little help from the human dads.)
I should note that although some people use the term “nibling” to refer to a nonbinary child of one’s sibling, there is no indication that Nellie, who uses she/her pronouns, is nonbinary; “nibling” here seems to be used simply as a collective term that doesn’t specify gender.
Once again, the hilarious, dry prose and the animal protagonists’ interactions are what make this book shine. Along the way, too, there’s a light lesson about making one’s own family and the fact that family members love you even if you make a big mistake, making this a recommended title.
