How Marriage Bans Teach Children Marriage Isn’t Necessary

(Originally published as my Mombian newspaper column.) Parenting took center stage in the closing arguments of the Prop 8 case on June 16. Attorney Ted Olson, by most accounts, made a superb argument for marriage equality. There was one point he left out, however, that is worth exploring here. Attorney Charles Cooper, speaking for the […]

Happy Marriage Equality, D.C.!

A big congratulations to the same-sex couples in Washington, D.C., who can apply for marriage licenses starting today, with ceremonies to begin March 9. (Here’s how, if you want to.) The D.C. Marriage Bureau says it is preparing for a “flood” of couples. Several couples have volunteered to be media spokespeople, and because a few

Dodd Says Daughters Helped Him Change His Mind on Marriage Equality

“Public officials aren’t supposed to change their minds,” said Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT). He has written a great piece, however, on how having young daughters has helped him turn towards marriage equality. This is a welcome breath of fresh air after all of the right-wing nonsense about how marriage equality will harm children. Dodd posted

Nancy Polikoff, professor of law at American University Washington College of Law, cautions us, however, that we should not tie parenthood and marriage too tightly.

Same-Sex Couples Marry in California: No Earthquakes Reported

No locusts, either. Lots of great photos, though. Here are a few of some well known couples, plus (because we’re all about the kids here at Mombian) a few showing happy kids and their just-wed parents. Go read Karen Ocamb’s on-the-ground report over at Bilerico for more on some of these families and others. Del
