Senate Begins Debate on Federal Marriage Amendment

Today, the U. S., Senate begins depate on the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA). It’s a simple-sounding piece of legislation:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

Here’s another quote:

In our free society, people have the right to choose how they live their lives.
President George W. Bush, Radio Address, June 3, 2006

Sense the dissonance?

If you haven’t yet taken action against the FMA, now is the time to do so. Today. Right now. Let the kids watch another five minutes of TV while you do this; it won’t stunt their development. Have HRC print out and deliver a postcard on your behalf or send an e-mail directly to your senators through the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Web site.
