Colorado Approves Second-Parent Adoption

Colorado FlagA piece of news too good to wait for my Weekly Political Roundup:

Colorado is now the 10th state in the country to allow second-parent adoptions. Both same- and opposite-sex unmarried couples may now adopt children together. Governor Bill Ritter signed the bill into law yesterday, despite pressure from conservative religious groups to veto it. He explained: “This law will give children a better chance to succeed.”

This is a major victory for same-sex couples and all those who know that love is what defines a family. The triumph is even greater given that same-sex marriage is still banned under the state constitution, and Colorado is the home of the ultra-conservative Focus on the Family group.

In a further win for reality-based legislation, Ritter also approved a bill yesterday that eliminates abstinence-only sex education (though abstinence may still be taught along with information about contraception and STDs).

Kudos to those who worked to achieve the new laws.

  1. Hooray!!!

I have nothing against teaching abstinence as long as it’s part of a comprehensive program. I don’t even have a problem with people who choose to remain abstinent. I have a huge problem with the folks who try to force their beliefs on others.
