Most of us LGBT parents will agree, I think, that we need more LGBT-inclusive children’s books — and more inclusive books across various dimensions of diversity. That’s why I’m so excited that a wonderful group of writers and publishers has created the “We Need Diverse Books” campaign to “to raise our voices into a roar that can’t be ignored.” All they need now is people’s participation.
The campaign starts today, and involves sharing a photo of yourself holding a sign that reads, “We need diverse books because ___.” (Fill in as you wish.) Tomorrow, there will be a Twitter chat with the hashtag #WeNeedDiverseBooks. Friday, there will be a “Diversify Your Shelves” initiative that seeks “to encourage people to put their money where their mouth is and buy diverse books and take photos of them.” See the campaign website for details and timing.
Here’s my photo and sign. Hope to see many of yours in the campaign!
