Lesbian Moms Create Dome Habitat to Protect Family from Getting Sick

Geodesic dome insideSpouses Ann T. Septick and Clea N. Liness created a hermetically sealed habitat for themselves and their family to protect them from ever getting sick, a move prompted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) recent anti-LGBTQ moves.

“Getting sick or injured isn’t worth the risk anymore,” Septick explained in a press release. “I don’t know if we’ll be turned away by a physician or have our kids turned away because they have two moms. Even if our primary care provider will treat us, I don’t know about every medical technician, emergency-room doctor, or school nurse.”

To avoid the risk, Septick and Liness built the geodesic dome in her family’s backyard, with room for themselves, their two children, ages seven  and nine years old, and their dog and two cats. The dome and furniture inside it have no sharp corners, to minimize the chance of injury. The solar-powered structure filters the air and water coming in and is stocked with enough food and supplies to last through January 2025, plus a garden for growing fresh fruits and vegetables. “We thought about only stocking enough to last through January 2021,” Liness said, “but we figured, why take chances? We can always leave early if the laws change. Besides, the place is basically a greenhouse and includes a garden for fruits and vegetables. We’ll be fine.” There’s also a section full of gym equipment, a lap pool, and a 50″ TV.

The women built the structure with PVC piping, glass panels, and fasteners that can be tightened with an IKEA tool. Liness, an elementary school teacher, will teach their kids. Septick, a mechanical engineer, will maintain the structure and its WiFi network. As to what their children will think about being cooped up? “Our kids mostly communicate with their friends online anyway,” Septick noted. “We don’t think they’ll notice any difference.”
