Team USA starts their Women’s World Cup quest today, so let’s celebrate with these kids’ books about Megan Rapinoe—picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade titles that not only highlight her path to soccer superstardom, but that also mention her lesbian identity and activism.
Sometimes it’s great to see LGBTQ protagonists simply having adventures like anyone else, and not always starring in books “about” their identities. In honor of International Nonbinary People’s Day (but good all year ’round), here are some picture books with protagonists who just happen to be nonbinary.
Dr. Cheri A. Pies, whose 1985 book, Considering Parenthood: A Workbook for Lesbians, helped innumerable queer women become parents during the “gayby boom” of the 1980s, died from cancer on July 4 at the age of 73. If you don’t know her name yet, you should; in many ways, all of us queer parents who came after have benefited from her work, whether we know it or not.
For young readers looking to move beyond picture books, but not quite ready for middle-grade titles, these four series offer text geared to their growing skills, engaging stories—and nonbinary protagonists!
