WNBA Playoffs Begin

The tenth WNBA playoffs begin today with the Houston Comets hosting the Sacramento Monarchs and the Detroit Fever hosting the Indiana Shock. The Seattle Storm and the LA Sparks, as well as the Connecticut Sun and the Washington Mystics, square up on Friday. The official WNBA site has all the schedules, stats, and interviews you […]

USTA to Rename Tennis Center for Billie Jean King

The U. S. Tennis Association announced it will rename the USTA National Tennis Center to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Her name will thus stand beside that of another barrier breaker, Arthur Ashe, for whom the Center’s largest stadium is named. The New York Times reports that Ashe’s widow, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, said

Overdoing It

Word to the wise: Never work out the day of a marriage-equality defeat. Doubly so if you watched Workout the night before. Creaking to the bathroom to pop some Ibuprofen. . . . Will post again later, if my arms still work.

“Workout” Premieres Tonight

Unless you’ve been completely out of touch with lesbian culture in the past week (and if you are, you probably aren’t reading this blog), you’ll know that tonight is the premiere of Bravo’s new docudrama, Workout, starring Hollywood fitness trainer and out lesbian Jackie Warner. If you want more of the inside scoop, you can

Mauresmo and Marriage

No, Amélie Mauresmo is not, to my knowledge, getting married. Her victory at Wimbledon yesterday, however, offers a lesson for those of us feeling dispirited after the same-sex marriage setbacks in New York and Georgia last week. In the final against Justine Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo lost the first set, but pulled off the next two to

Lesbians, Tennis, and Inspiration

Some cheery news to counteract the political gloom this week. Out lesbian Amélie Mauresmo will contend for her first Wimbledon championship tomorrow, against Justine Henin-Hardenne. Mauresmo won their last Grand Slam final matchup, this year’s Australian Open, when Henin-Hardenne withdrew because of stomach illness. I’ll probably root for Mauresmo because she’s a member of our

Martina Retires—But First, the Quarterfinals

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has announced that she’ll retire this year. Martina, who will turn 50 in October, has not yet decided on her last tournament, but insists, “It’s time.” She says she wants to spend more time at home, promoting her new book, and “devoting more time to her partner, her animals and her

Wimbledon 2006—and Martina, Of Course

It’s Wimbledon time again, and play begins today at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Out lesbian Amélie Mauresmo is the number-one seed and a contender for the women’s singles title. Lesbian icon Martina Navratilova, who turned pro in 1975, will play doubles. I had the pleasure of hearing Martina talk on an Olivia cruise

“The Heart of the Game” Looks at Girls’ Basketball and Lives

The Heart of the Game, a new documentary about a Seattle girls’ high-school basketball team, opened yesterday in Los Angeles and New York. The film, an official selection of the Toronto Film Festival, looks fantastic, based on trailer and reviews. One of those worth getting a sitter for, rather than waiting for Netflix. It captures

Women Ski Jumpers Move Closer to Olympic Inclusion

The International Ski Federation (FIS) voted Friday to add a women’s individual ski-jumping event to the 2009 World Championships in the Czech Republic. This is a necessary (but not sufficient) step for including the sport in the Olympics. If women ski jumpers are to compete in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, both the Canadian organizing committee
