What Arkansas and Idaho Marriage Rulings Say About Children

It’s been a great few days for marriage equality, with an Arkansas state judge and a federal judge in Idaho striking down those states’ bans on marriage for same-sex couples. As with similar rulings in other states, the welfare of children weighed heavily in the judges’ decisions.

What We Did on Mother’s Day

When I spoke at HuffPo Live last week, the interviewer asked what our son did for us on Mother’s Day. What he does is only part of our family celebration, however. Here’s what our whole day looked like this year.

To All Types of Mothers on Mothers’ Day

As I was thinking about what to write for this column, I did what any self-respecting parenting writer would do, and asked my son. “Write about how there are many types of moms,” he suggested. “You know, like how some moms are all girly but you’re not.”

You’re Invited: Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day Is June 2

Yes, it’s that time of year again, and you’re all invited to join me for the 9th Annual Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day! (We’ve added the “Q” this year for extra queerness.) In addition to the blogging event on Monday, June 2, I have a special treat this year: an in-person LGBTQ Families Celebration on Sunday, June 1, for anyone in the Boston area. Anyone who wants to show their support for LGBTQ families is welcome. Details after the jump.

Most of us LGBT parents will agree, I think, that we need more LGBT-inclusive children’s books — and more inclusive books across various dimensions of diversity. That’s why I’m so excited that a wonderful group of writers and publishers has created the “We Need Diverse Books” campaign to “to raise our voices into a roar that can’t be ignored.” All they need now is people’s participation.
