LGBT Parents: the Forgotten Voices of Prop. 8

(Originally published by Bay Windows, November 13, 2008.) Many are blaming the passage of California’s Prop 8 on black voters, 73 percent of whom supported the measure. People have, however, mostly ignored another group that voted in a significant majority for Prop 8: parents. Sixty-four percent of voters with children under 18 voted for it, […]

Our Families Are Equal

In lieu of our “She Got Me Pregnant” vlog, which I will post tomorrow, here’s a video compiled by the Family Equality Council from images sent in by LGBT parents around the country, “declaring their families equal.” It’s become the eighth most-viewed video on YouTube this week in the Nonprofits & Activism category.

LGBT Parenting Roundup

[Our “She Got Me Pregnant” vlog will be posted tomorrow. Stay tuned. Back to Thursdays next week.] A few items of note from hither and yon: Thomas Beatie, the transgender man whose pregnancy made headlines, is expecting a second child, ABC News reveals. Prop 8-spawned videos are flying fast and furious. I’m partial to this one. (Thanks, Good As You.) See more funny videos at Funny or Die

Weekly Political Roundup

So nothing much happened in politics this week . . . . You know the key points: Obama won; Arizona, Arkansas, California, and Florida all passed anti-LGBT measures. Kate Kendall of the National Center for Lesbian Rights has noted that 3 million to 4 million absentee and provisional ballots remain uncounted statewide. The Sacramento Bee reports: “The fact is depending on the turnout model we are looking

Barack Obama has made history. I am thrilled beyond belief at this. He will be the first president my son remembers, and I can think of no better. And yet . . . . Marriage of same-sex couples is now not only illegal but unconstitutional in Arizona and Florida. Same-sex couples can no longer adopt

Why No On 8? Think of the Children

How will a vote against Prop 8 impact children? The latest No On 8 ad, called “Parents,” explains: I’m sure most readers here already agree. If you need to convince those who prefer an opinion that doesn’t come from a No On 8-produced ad, however, here’s what straight über-momblogger and self-described “recovering Mormon” Dooce had

Weekly Political Roundup: Halloween Edition

I suppose it’s appropriate that on All Hallow’s Eve the news seems scarier than usual. I’m going to focus on the U.S. election this week because that’s what I’m focused on, other than wondering how to get my son down from his sugar high tonight. Here are some selected articles about the anti-equality Props: The
