Once in a while I see something that renews my faith in our future.
Today in my son’s playgroup, two three-year-old girls were running around together, laughing and clearly having fun. When the teacher began storytime, they sat down with their arms around each other. One girl gave the other a kiss on the cheek. “Look, Mommy,” said a third girl, pointing to them, “They’re like married.”
It’s not that I was watching them and thinking, “There are a couple of baby dykes.” It’s too early to speculate, and odds are, all of those girls will grow up to be straight. It was the third girl who made the impression on me. She saw two people—two women—showing love for each other, and related it, with pure childhood inhibition, to a marriage.
If she can keep that gut knowledge of what a marriage is, and why love matters more than gender, then there’s hope for all the families of my son’s generation.
